Neighborhood Councils enrich the lives of local youth by creating events like job fairs and sponsoring activities ranging from sports to robotics as well as offering the opportunity to serve on a board or vote in Council elections. Many youth board members are part of the Neighborhood Council Civic Youth Program, which works with youth 13-24 years old over the summer to educate them about civics and begin them on the path of community advocacy for the rest of their lives.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment has grown into the nation’s largest and most innovative initiative in civic engagement and citizen-based government through the “EmpowerLA” movement. With a network of 99 Neighborhood Councils, Los Angeles promotes public participation in government and works to improve government responsiveness to local concerns. Visit EmpowerLA.org to learn more about how the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment supports Neighborhood Councils and Angelenos citywide.
