Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council

Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council's Refugee Welcoming Commitee inspired a City Council resolution to support the creation of similar committees on all Neighborhood Councils. ERNC's Miry Whitehill-Ben Atar was recognized by the City Council for her role founding this innovative program to help refugees adjust to life in the United States.

Elysian Valley Riverside Neighborhood Council

Elysian Valley Riverside's Health Fair featured free health resources, healthy food demos, entertainment, free childcare, and presentations. Locals were able to meet with over 60 local health agencies at the event, who offered screenings and consultations with doctors on issues like dental, flu shots, osteoporosis, cholesterol, and diabetes. The ONEgeneration Senior Symposium is an annual event featuring free health screenings and vendors whose products and services are beneficial to the lives of older adults. Lunch is provided, and shuttles transport attendees from the ONEgeneration campus to the event. Neighborhood Councils identify critical needs for services or knowledge in their communities and hold workshops and fairs connecting Angelenos to vital health, legal, and immigration services. They will often work together to magnify their effect in the community as the Valley Neighborhood Councils have for their senior citizens.

Since its establishment in 1999, the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment has grown into the nation’s largest and most innovative initiative in civic engagement and citizen-based government through the “EmpowerLA” movement. With a network of 99 Neighborhood Councils, Los Angeles promotes public participation in government and works to improve government responsiveness to local concerns.
